How to Build a Stirling Engine

A Stirling engine is a kind of heat engine where the heat of the engine runs because of the cyclical compression and spreading out of working fluid, gas, or air at various temperature levels. This results to conversion of mechanical energy from heat energy.

In 1816, Robert Stirling found out how to build a Stirling engine and was predicted. At present, a Stirling engine is only used on specific machines such as submarines and in yachts where it is used as a back up generator of power source. It is preferred for operations where quietness is a must.

How to Build a Stirling Engine

Materials

The materials needed to build a Stirling engine are the following:
Red Bull tins
Coke tins
High-temperature glue
Straight pins
Silicon gasket
Balloon
PVC elbow
Washer
Bolt

Instructions

1. Build a ring stand by using the Coke tin. Make it concave and hollow. After it is already hollowed, cut the tin into halves. Get the bottom part that has the base ring. Slice the tin's sides and create a ring that has three legs. The sides of the tin should be slashed and curved so that it becomes the ring stand.

2) Then, start constructing the engine's pressure vessel. Use another Coke tin can and scrap off the can's sides. Next go on cutting off the upper portion to form a vessel. This would serve as the pressure vessel's lower area. In making the upper area, use another Coke tin can. From the lower part, cut out at least 2 inches. Then, get the bottom part and create a hole in the middle using the pin. Glue in the bolt and the steel plate, which is a small rectangle, on the internal core of the pressure vessel's upper part. The glue serves as prevention for leakage.

3) Construct the displacer. The steps in creating it is similar to how the pressure vessel was made but the Red Bull tin cans would be used. Also, the engine's displacer should fit in the interior of the pressure vessel and should be capable of preventing leakage.

4) Construct a crankshaft using a piece of the coat hanger. Then, create a supporter for the crank. For the support, cut out two Red Bull tin cans and make holes. Set these aside. Put together the crank and the supports. Make sure that the crank can smoothly rotate in the supports. Once done, attach this piece in the upper part of the pressure vessel.

5) Construct a diaphragm by cutting out from the balloon a disc's shape. It is the diaphragm that would unite the disk with the crank. Make sure that it is durable so that it would not be damaged during rotation.

These are all the steps on how to build a Stirling engine. It is now ready to be used. When running the engine, the lower portion of the pressure vessel should be heated and, after about 20 to 30 seconds, lightly press on the flywheel so that it would rotate. The pressure vessel should be constantly cooled down. Avoid it to become overheated. Putting an ice on the vessel's upper part would help. Just make sure that the ice water would not get through the engine.

If you're like us, you've been getting more and more concerned and frustrated with the high price of gasoline at the pump. You've thought about buying a hybrid, but most drivers don't experience enough savings in gas to make the car worth it at all.

How's that you ask? Ever read the label on a rechargeable battery? You can't throw them out. They're toxic and contain heavy metals that can pollute ground water. Think of 20 years from now, all the hybrid cars sitting in junk yards with their batteries leaking heavy metals into the soil!

A lot of proponents will tell you that the batteries will be recycled for new cars, but right now all Hybrids are using Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries, but in just a few years those will be obsolete as we move on to Lithium-Ion batteries. No, Hybrids are a fad, and unfortunately they are one that are just as likely to do more damage than good to our planet!

So what now? What other things are there that we can burn in our cars?

Because let's face it, our entire economy is now reliant on cheap, fast transportation. If there is a solution out there that can allow us to keep our cars and not destroy the world we live in, we need to explore it fully.

For years now there has been talk of burning hydrogen. It releases nothing more than steam into the air. The downside is that hydrogen is dangerous. Extremely dangerous. Driving cars that carry tanks of hydrogen would be concerning to say the least. There is a lot of money being poured into ways to make impenetrable tanks to transport hydrogen, when there is a much easier solution, a solution that you can create yourself.

If this is so easy to do, why aren't the car companies offering it?

Think back a hundred years when cars as we know them were first being created. Was it the big manufacturing companies of the day? Were the train companies branching out into cars? No, it was small inventors and machinists who took the important steps and created most of the major auto companies that are still around today. The Wright brothers were bicycle shop owners and they were mocked endlessly for their attempts to fly.

The reason why the big companies of the day didn't do it then is the same reason why the big companies of the day aren't doing it now. Money. They've invested a ton of money into creating the current technologies and building all the infrastructure to support them. Their shareholders wouldn't take too kindly if they turned all of that on its ear.

It's up to us to take the necessary steps to save our world.

There is a simple solution. A Wright Brothers, or Dodge Brothers, or Mr Diesel type of solution: Water contains fuel. Think about it, water contains Hydrogen and Oxygen. 'Burning' is a chemical reaction of a fuel and oxygen, and if you can split the Hydrogen from the Oxygen in water, you have everything you need to create combustion and run your car's engine. We'll save you too much of the technical jargon, but there are several ways to create this separation. It isn't a direct split, but rather an alteration of the water into a gas that can burn. One of the gasses is called 'Brown Gas' and another is called 'HHO'. For the average person's needs they are effectively the same, but feel free to Google them if you want to know more.

Burning HHO or Brown Gas is even better for the environment than just burning Hydrogen!

Think about what I mentioned above. Nearly everything that burns, burns because of a reaction with oxygen. The output of burning Hydrogen is that you combine oxygen and hydrogen and make water. While this certainly isn't bad, it doesn't help areas of the world that are already low on oxygen.

The natural mix of our 'Air' contains 15% oxygen. Humans start to die when it dips below 5%. Some places like Tokyo, Japan are already as low as 6-7% at times. That is dangerously low. By starting with water and creating Brown Gas or HHO, one of the things that will come out of your tailpipe is oxygen. That's right, plain, simple O.

So can we help the environment and save money on gas?

That's the question I asked when I first really started looking into this technology. I found a lot of wild and outlandish claims. Claims that stated that you could use 0% gas and 100% water. I did a lot of research and found that yes, that is true, but you'll have to fill your entire trunk with water jugs to get enough HHO, or Brown Gas to run your car.

So I started looking at the hydrogen kits that enhance your car, but don't claim to pull it off of gas permanently. These seemed more reasonable and feasible. I have a fairly good understanding of how cars work and what emissions are. One of the things that a lot of people know about is a little thing in their car called the catalytic convertor. This device sits in your exhaust pipe and simply put, gets really, really hot. It does this because your car's engine doesn't really burn all the gas, and a lot of it is expelled in a toxic, half burnt stew. The catalytic convertor gets hot and finishes the burn on this gasý mostly.

Adding hydrogen to the air-fuel mixture in a car's engine will allow the engine to burn the gas more completely because the hydrogen is simply more flammable. This makes your engine vastly increase its efficiency and have a more complete burn. This is good for you, and for the environment!

Can our car do this?

Yes, nearly any gas burning car can do this! (Diesel owners can run their diesel engines on fuel made from vegetable oil, so they have alternatives too!). You can buy expensive kits to do this, or you can buy manuals that show you components you can pick up at any home improvement store and convert your car yourself!

Think about it, an ebook and materials that cost you under 0 that can save you as much as each time you fill up! I don't know about you, but that's not even two months for me to make that up. And with vacation time around the corner I can recover an expense like that in a few weeks.

Raw Material - Group orders together as much as possible. Never order cut lengths instead of full lengths. Full lengths of material are always cheaper then cut pieces. If small pieces are absolutely necessary ask your vendor to quote you "Randoms" These are the pieces that are left over from a previous cut order and are usually offered at a substantial discount.

Cutting tools - never order the made in china cutting tools. A .00 Made in USA end mill will out perform the .00 Import any day of the week. Expect to go through 3 import Endmills to every one domestic end mill. This will add to your cutting tool overhead, lower your per piece volume and add to tool change cycle times. Also don't be afraid to shop around for your cutting tools. Many tool vendors are in the same boat you are in and will sell you tools at a very low mark up. If at all possible talk to someone at your vendors inside sales department. Many tools can be offered at great quantity discounts if you pool your order and just ask for a discount.

Recycle your chips - Scrap your Stainless and Aluminum chips. Also don't forget your broken and dull carbides.

Many machine tool manufacturers will refer to you clients who are interested in purchasing the same machine you have but cannot afford it at the current time. This is especially true with specialized equipment. Just call up your tool salesman and ask.

Precision pays - The tighter the tolerance the more time consuming and difficult the job is. If you are a true journeyman machinist this niche will always be profitable regardless of the economy.

Welders - Contact all the local welders in your area. If they scratch your back you will scratch theirs. All the welding work you get you contract to them in exchange for all the machining requirements they have.

SBA- Take advantage of all the resources, loans and grants offered by the SBA. (If you have been in business for 2 years)

Accounting - A good CPA will be your best friend in business, always do what they say financially. If you have a doubt with what they say question them and have them explain their reasoning.

Market your business - Create business cards, brochures, capability cards and a website. Let your prospective customer know upfront exactly what you can do, what you specialize in and what your capabilities are. You don't want to be wasting your time quoting jobs you cannot handle.

Quoting - When calculating your hourly rate due not include profit in the rate. That way when you quote a job the price that calculates is your "zero" rate. This is the price that you will break even on if you do not factor in your profit (Sometimes you will want to quote a job at "zero" to win that new customer). Once you have your zero rates you can play with it. For the first 3 or so jobs quote it at a 5% profit margin. Then jobs after that you can bring it up to 12%-15%. Using this method you will always know your break-even rate and can adjust your profit margin to the market at any given time. When the jobs are good your profit mark up can be high. When the jobs are not so easy to come by you can quote at a very little mark up or no mark up at all.

Contingency in Quoting - Always add a small 3-5% contingency to quotes. This will cover the inevitable price increases or expedited shipping or other unforeseen charge that will break your profit margin.

Gas Versus Diesel - RV's

This article discusses an age old question and one I get asked a lot, should I buy gas or diesel? This question has fueled many a heated debates too. Sometimes this question involves a truck that will be used to tow a trailer, and other times it involves what type of motorhome to purchase. A universal response you could expect to hear to this question goes something like this: Diesels cost more. Don't buy a diesel unless you plan to put a bunch of miles on it and keep it for a long time. That's the only way you can justify the extra cost of a diesel.

Several years ago there was some truth to this somewhat typical response. But things are changing, especially when you're talking about motorhomes. Today, the cost of some gasoline powered motorhomes is about the same as many of the entry level diesel motorhomes available on the market. This higher cost is mainly due to advancements in gasoline RV chassis' design; with greater Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings (GVWR) to accommodate coach designs with 3 and 4 slideouts. And don't forget to factor in the new technology in gasoline engine and transmission design over the past several years.

Cheap Diesel

The old response, of diesels costing more, does hold true with some of the specialized diesel chassis manufacturers, but it's not just the engine that accounts for these higher prices. You are moving to a much higher plateau across the board. For the most part gasoline RV chassis' are heavy duty truck chassis' modified for Recreation Vehicle use, whereas many diesel chassis' are a bus chassis. These bus chassis' have even greater GVWR's, air brakes, air ride suspension systems, larger transmissions, rear mounted diesel engines and more. They handle better, ride better and cost more. I always say you get what you pay for.

Gas Versus Diesel - RV's

Other than the cost factor between gas and diesel motorhomes, what are we really talking about when it comes down to gas versus diesel? Say for example in a truck you want to use to pull a trailer. This is where we need to factor in the engine itself. This is also where torque and horsepower come into the equation.

Explaining torque and horsepower can get extremely technical, and we want to keep this simple and easy to understand. With that said, torque is basically the force or energy required to move something. Torque is the measurement of force, and force is measured in reference to a twisting or rotating shaft. In English terms torque is measured in pounds-feet, but is more commonly referred to as foot-pounds. So in keeping it simple let's just say that torque can be thought of as the amount of turning force it takes to move one pound of weight the distance of one foot.

Torque can be multiplied through gear ratios. You have probably heard that the higher the real axle gear ratio is the better the truck will tow. The axle ratio is the number of times the driveshaft must rotate to turn the rear wheels one time. If you have a 3.73:1 axle ratio the drive shaft turns 3.73 times for each full turn of the axle. So in a sense torque really equals towing capacity.

Horsepower on the other hand is torque X RPM's. Torque is how much work is being done, and horsepower is how fast you get the actual work done. What's interesting is an engine rated at 350 horsepower only produces that horsepower at a rated peak power RPM. This RPM range, for a gasoline engine, is often between 5,000 and 6,000 RPM's. When an engine is idling the horsepower is significantly lower, and as the RPM's raise so does the horsepower. When you are towing a trailer the engine speed is more likely to be in the low to mid 2,000 RPM range, which means you probably have slightly more than half of the rated horsepower. Horsepower is measured by a dynamometer. A dynamometer puts a load on the engine and measures the amount of power the engine produces against the load at various speeds. In reality it is measuring torque in pound-feet and converting it to horsepower. Even at the rated peak power RPM you won't really get the rated horsepower because a percentage is lost through auxiliary equipment on the engine and the process of getting it back to the wheels.

In a diesel engine the horsepower peaks at a lower RPM, and there is more torque at a lower RPM compared to a gasoline engine. This results in a diesel engine having much more power at a lower RPM, around the RPM range you will be towing at. This higher torque and higher horsepower at a lower RPM equates to better towing.

There are many other factors involved in the question of gas versus diesel that you will need to consider. What are the maintenance costs involved, cost difference between fuel types, fuel economy, your budget, and the resale value? Whether it's for a tow vehicle or a motorhome, take your time and make a well informed decision when comparing gas to diesel.

If the question is which truck will tow more or which motorhome has more torque the diesel will win hands down, but I honestly have no complaints with our gas powered motorhome either. Especially when considering the price.

Q&A

Question: Why does a diesel engine have more torque?

Mark Says: Much of the reason is in the way the engine is designed. Internal combustion engines use spark from a spark plug to ignite fuel in the combustion chamber of a gasoline engine and the high heat from compression to ignite the fuel in a diesel engine. It's more difficult to burn diesel fuel so diesel engines have higher compression ratios resulting in more heat to ignite the fuel and more power.

Question: I have always heard that a diesel engine is much louder than a gas engine, is this true?

Mark Says: If you asked me that several years ago the answer would have been yes, but newer diesel engines are actually very quiet.

Question: You said in the article a diesel motorhome rides better, why is that?

Mark Says: Most gas motorhome chassis' use leaf spring suspension systems. With this suspension system you will experience things like "body roll" and "pitch." whenever pressure is exerted against one side of the motorhome. It can be caused by a gust of wind, a shift in weight while cornering, or a passing truck. The effects of sway on a motorhome are increased because of the height and mass of the motorhome. A diesel chassis uses an air ride suspension system. These systems keep the chassis adjusted to the proper ride height at all times by adding and releasing air as required. And the way the system is designed eliminates the pitch and roll affect you get from leaf spring suspensions, resulting in a smoother riding motorhome.

Mercedes Sprinter RVs: Build a Truly Independent Sprinter Camper Van Powered by Diesel and Solar

What is it you enjoy about having an RV or camper van? For me, it's the experience of camping, being out in the woods or mountains somewhere, preferably in some quiet spot by a lake or stream - not a campground or RV park. Sure, there's a spectrum of what you might call camping, with ultralight backpacking at one side, 60" diesel pushers with slide-outs at another end, and us somewhere in the middle with a 19' camper van with two little kids. We still want to get out camping, but backpacking isn't an option right now!

When I was a backpacker, I liked fairly minimal setups, and with my Mercedes Sprinter camper van, the same goes. I don't plan to end up anywhere with full hook-ups, so my preferred equipment is what makes you more independent. That's not typical of most North American RVs - walk on board and you'll see the typical triad of propane-powered appliances:

Cheap Diesel

Often RVs will have a microwave and coffee-maker too, just to be complete with every convenience. How "convenient" is it to need plug-ins or a generator running to power all this?

Conserving power (and money!) is especially important if you're building your own do-it-yourself camper van or RV conversion. If one of your key goals is to keep costs down, you can do this by eliminating expensive equipment and appliances typical of conventional RVs. How can we do this?

Pick The Best Camper Van Platform
Within the past five years, more and more motorhomes and RV conversions are being built on the Mercedes Sprinter chassis. For 2011, for example, the Mercedes Sprinter 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel is rated at 188 bhp, with a peak power of 325 ft-lbs. of torque. Compared to other gasoline-powered vans, the Sprinter can offer more usable power and better fuel-efficiency, typically getting 18-22 mpg in actual use. And now that ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel is widely available across North America, it's pretty easy to get fuel almost anywhere.

With a Sprinter as your base for a camper van, you can buck the RV status quo - using propane. For the last several decades, North American motorhomes - from small camper vans to A, B and C-class RV conversions - have used propane to fuel camping equipment. There are good reasons why:
Propane was cheap and available everywhere There are a huge number of choices in propane-powered RV appliances, and they're mostly very reliable

Nowadays, the price of propane is on the rise. And besides the increasing cost, using propane on your Sprinter RV is not without its drawbacks:
It requires a propane tank, typically mounted underneath the RV chassis, which reduces ground clearance and adds an enormous amount of weight An open flame (from a propane stove, for example) can burn the inattentive and produce condensation on RV windows in cold weather It's one more fuel source to manage, in addition to the fuel used by the RV

Do Without Propane
There's a new choice for RVs, especially if you have a Mercedes Sprinter - do without propane at all. Until very recently, there were no RV appliances available in North America powered by diesel - but that has now changed. If we return to the "triad" of equipment we talked about earlier, the choices look like this:
Cooktop - Webasto, the RV arm of the Finnish marine firm Wallas, now makes a 12-volt diesel-powered ceramic-topped cooktop especially for RV use. The two-burner X100 cooktop has no open flame, uses the same diesel from the Sprinter's fuel tank, and even includes altitude settings. Heat - For interior heat, you can choose between Webasto's AirTop or Espar's Airtronic 12V diesel-powered air heaters, much more compact than many propane furnaces and possibly quieter, especially with a muffler option. Air heaters will also not ever corrode, unlike hydronic heaters. Refrigeration - Many 12V DC RV refrigerators are on the market that use the extremely-efficient Danfoss sealed compressor, including models by Engel and Novakool, among others.

But How Do We Get By Without Shore Power?
Well, you say, if we cut out propane, we need more electric power, especially for refrigeration. You're right, but if you follow a design strategy of conservation, you can cut power use enormously in your Sprinter camper. This means tactics like:
Power System - Plan for a 12V DC power system for your Sprinter RV conversion. Not incorporating a hardwired inverter will save you a lot of money, and if you really need clean AC power for small loads (like charging a laptop computer), you can buy small inverters that plug into any 12V outlet Lights - Use LED rather than incandescent, and get the lowest-power types that meet your lighting needs. However, check the lumen output and the spectrum (choose "warm" or "daylight") to ensure you get LED lights that work well in your van. Microwave - Ditch it, and ditto for the home-size electric coffee-maker. Are you really that short on time when you're camping? Microwaves use an enormous amount of power, so they're great for homes, not camper vans. Solar - No, it's not conservation, but you need another power source - one that's quiet and reliable. Get some solar panels, preferably 2-4 mounted on the roof of your Sprinter, and an appropriate solar charge controller and good AGM batteries. Having a good solar system, not just a trickle charger, is essential if you want to do without propane, hook-ups or a generator. There's more to a good RV solar system than just these few words, but that's material for another article.

I hope you'll think about building a do-it-yourself Mercedes Sprinter camper van or RV conversion, and the arguments I've laid out for just using diesel-powered appliances and solar, without propane or a generator. It will save you money, and give you the independence to camp anywhere in your Sprinter - what's not to like about that?

Really, How Much Does Biodiesel Cost?

In a word: not much – at least not for what you get. Whether you buy it or make it yourself, the benefits of biodiesel far outweigh the biodiesel cost in so many ways. This article, examines the actual financial biodiesel cost – both biodiesel prices for those who choose to buy theirs from biodiesel production companies and for making biodiesel oneself.

How do biodiesel prices compare with other fuel costs, mile for mile?

Cheap Diesel

• B100 or 100% biodiesel cost an average of 8.2 cents per mile, and gets:o 37 miles per gallon in the city; o 45 miles per gallon on the highway;

Really, How Much Does Biodiesel Cost?

• Unleaded gasoline cost an average of 6.9 cents per mile, and gets: o 25 miles per gallon in the city; o 31 miles per gallon on the highway;

• B20 or a mixture of 80% petroleum-based diesel and 20% biodiesel cost 6.0 cents per mile, and gets: o 37 miles per gallon in the city; o 45 miles per gallon on the highway;

• Conventional, petroleum-based diesel cost an average of 5.2 cents per mile, and gets: o 38 miles per gallon in the city; o 46 miles per gallon on the highway.

The mileage one gets from using biodiesel as compared with regular, unleaded gasoline more than makes up for the slightly higher biodiesel cost, especially when you consider that biodiesel prices should only go down over time, whereas the cost of crude oil, and therefore the price of gas at the pump, is only expected to rise or, at best, settle off somewhere around current prices.

By the same token, the fact that conventional diesel fuel is the cheapest of all of them and gets the best mileage in no way discounts the cost-effectiveness of using biodiesel. Again, while gas and diesel prices are rising, biodiesel cost is expected to soften. A gallon of biodiesel cost just 5 years ago. At the time of this writing biodiesel cost .30-.50 and is getting lower all the time. Not only that, but biodiesel also runs cleaner than its contemporaries, and cleans and lubricates engines. All of these factors contribute to prolonging engine life and reducing vehicle maintenance costs.

Biodiesel is also good for the U.S. economy. A surge in biodiesel demand, like the one we’re currently experiencing and which is only expected to continue to swell, is expected within the next 10 years to create up to 50,000 new jobs for Americans.

Over the next 5 years, U.S. farmers could see their bottom line increase by as much as billion thanks to biodiesel. How, you ask? In at least two ways. First, if biodiesel takes off (so to speak), feedstock prices for vegetable oils will steadily increase. The price of a bushel of soybeans, for one, is projected to rise by .10 per year if biodiesel overtook diesel and gasoline as our fuel of choice. Secondly, the government is currently (and for a limited time only) offering incentives in the form of tax credits on the cost of biodiesel production (see our companion piece, “Government Incentives and Tax Credits for Biodiesel Production & Sale [http://biodiesel.biogreenlife.com/43/the-government-offers-incentives-for-biodiesel-production-distribution/]”). All this makes one thing abundantly clear – as biodiesel becomes more widely used, it will only become more and more profitable, while at the same time leading to a welcome decline in biodiesel prices as well as the biodiesel cost of production.

Get a Used RV For Sale Cheap at Repo Auctions

There are several advantages to buying an RV at auction.   You can literally save thousands on the initial purchase. Dealers generally need to mark new RVs up 30 to 40% to cover their overhead. While it's not unheard of to buy a used RV below wholesale at auction.   You are also less likely to end upside on the purchase, since the price is heavily discounted when you buy. And you may be able to avoid today's tight market for financing altogether.  

Yes, you can find campers for sale at auction in very good condition You're buying someone's used vacation vehicle, or the inventory off a lot when a dealer left the business or went bankrupt. Financiers usually require quite good credit to buy an RV new. Chances are good that the unit you're buying was well looked after. You may even be able to get a used RV for sale still under the manufacturer's warranty.  

Cheap Diesel

So, how do you find the best auctions?   RVs go on sale regularly as a result of government surpluses (like the FEMA campers for Hurricane Katrina), seized vehicles, and repos. The key is to find the auctions which are generally not well publicized. The key is to find out where and how often.   There aren't a lot of ways to find the auctions.
Keep an eye on your local classified ads, and Craigslist. You're looking for auctions sponsored by a government body. They'll usually show up as "Government Auctions", or "State Auctions", "Marshall's auctions" or something similar. Read the RV trades and press and look for announcements. Make a local dealer your friend. They may tell you where they find used campers or even look out for a specific model for you for a small fee. Join a site that announces public auctions.A website is your most convenient option and the most reliable. They will collect all the information you need for a host of auctions in your area and around the country - times and places of sales, directions, and contact information if the auction is live. And they'll let you bid from your PC if the auction is online.   Do your homework though, the few very good auction sites track thousands of auctions. They vary widely in the amount they charge you, the kinds of auctions they track, and how easy it is to find the auctions you want on their site.
